Am contemplating on getting a new camera. Am deciding between these two. |||Although either camera will give you good performance, they are getting close in price to a DSLR.
Any DSLR will have a much larger sensor which will give you much better results, especially at higher ISO settings. The DSLR also has interchangeable lenses so you are never limited in your creativity.
The learning curve for the G9 or 10 will be similar to that of a DSLR so there's no advantage.
I suggest checking the DSLR cameras offered by Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Canon and Nikon. I sincerely believe that in the long run you'll be happier with a DSLR.|||I agree. The G10 is slightly better than the G9, because it features Canon's latest Digic 4 processor...however it's not much better than most other point %26amp; shoot cameras (due to it's very small sensor) and has quite poor ISO capability.
For the same price (or a little more), you can buy an entry-level dSLR, which will provide you with superior image quality and performance compared to the G10.
So, I recommend a dSLR, but if you definitely want a more compact camera then the G10 would be ok...I suppose. Just don't expect great image quality, particularly when shooting in lower light...|||Best you make your own side by side comparison to see if the G10 is worth the difference.
They're both outstanding cameras.
Check DPReview for specifics.
In my experience, either of these is superior in many ways to an entry level DSLR. Specifically - and most importantly - quality of construction and materials, and quality of lens.
So ... your choice: Top of the line Bridge camera (G9 or G10), or bottom of the line DSLR (Rebel, D40, et al).
Actually, my first choice would not be the 9 or 10. It would be the Canon SX10is.
